There will be four club competitions during the session. They will all have an open subject and will consist of two sections with the following categories each.

General Section: Monochrome Prints, Colour Prints, Projected Images

Novice Section: Monochrome Prints, Colour Prints, Projected Images

  1. All entrants must be fully paid-up members of Dundee Photographic Society.

General Section

  1. Members may submit up to two images in each category (monochrome print, colour print and projected image) in each competition.
  2. Images may be submitted only once for the club competitions.
  3. Projected digital images are to be submitted in the following format.
    1. Mode - RGB Colour, 8 bits only or Greyscale, 8 bits
      Please Note - The projector works in the colour space - sRGB, your images will be converted to this by the projector automatically, but it is recommended that you submit your files in sRGB.
    2. File Format - jpeg or tiff (no compression)
    3. Image Size - 2048 pixels horizontal maximum, 1536 pixels vertical maximum.
      Please Note - 1024 x 768 is the native resolution of the projector so these dimensions will give optimum viewing (additional notes available on how to resize your image).
    4. Images must not contain layers; they must be 'flattened' prior to submission.
    5. The Image itself must not display the title or author name or any other text. Entrants must not indicate their names, but their DPS Membership Number, as shown on the member's syllabus, (e.g. DPS No.123) and each image should be numbered e.g. the file name for a first image would be dps 123_01.tif Failure to give the DPS Number will result in exclusion from the competition
    6. You must write your files onto a 'CD-R', not a re-writeable disk or a DVD, and make sure that the 'session is closed'. Images MUST NOT be submitted by email. Write your DPS number, image numbers and titles on the CD. Please do not stick labels onto your CD.
    7. You must ensure that no 'virus' is present within your CD; all CDs will be checked when submitted, any found with a virus will not be submitted.
  4. There is no minimum picture area for prints. All prints should be mounted suitably on card. The overall size, including mount, must not exceed 500mm x 400mm. Brief technical details may be given on the back of prints and a title should be given for ease of identification.
  5. Entrants must not indicate their names, but their DPS Membership Number, as shown on the member's syllabus, (e.g. DPS No. 123), must be marked clearly on the back of the print mount. Failure to give the DPS Number will result in exclusion from the competition. Labels relating to awards from previous external competitions/salons should be removed or covered up.
  6. Entries should be submitted by the close of the Society meeting indicated in the syllabus. Submissions after this time may be accepted by the Competition Secretary at his/her discretion, and his/her decision will be final.
  7. All prints and images submitted will be shown and commented upon by the judge on the night of the competition.
  8. Any judge who is a member of Dundee Photographic Society will not be eligible to enter any category of the competition that he/she is judging.
  9. Marks out of 20 will be awarded by the judge for each entry and he/she will choose a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th print/image.
  10. A trophy will be awarded to the entrant with the most points in total from monochrome prints, colour prints and projected digital images over the four club competitions.
  11. Final Competition: All 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed prints/images from the session's four club competitions may be submitted for the final competition. Trophies will be awarded for best monochrome print, colour print and projected image in both general and novice sections.
  12. The trophies will be held by the respective winners for twelve months. The trophies remain the property of DPS and must be returned at the end of the twelve-month period to any DPS Council member, unless the return of the trophy is requested earlier by the Council.

Novice Section

This section is designed to encourage novices to take part in competitions with others of a similar standard. New members of Dundee Photographic Society with previous photographic experience should enter the General Section.

  1. Each of the four club competitions and the final competition will have a novice section.
  2. Entrants may compete in any or all of the categories, but must remain in the novice section for the whole session.
  3. Rules 1 to 13 (General Section), except rules 6, 10 and 12, also apply to the Novice Section. In the Novice Section rule 6 (General Section) is replaced by rule 17 (Novice Section), rule 10 (General Section) by rule 18 (Novice Section), and rule 12 by rule 20
  4. Entrants must not indicate their names, but their DPS Membership Number, as shown on the member's syllabus, must be given and suffixed with an 'N', (e.g. DPS No. 123N). This must be marked clearly on the back of the print mount. If the N is not added to the member number the entry will be judged in the general section. Failure to give the DPS Number will result in exclusion from the competition.
  5. Marks out of 20 will be awarded by the judge for each entry and he/she will choose a 1st and 2nd print/image.
  6. The winners of the novice section categories on the finals night will not be eligible to enter the novice section in subsequent years.
  7. Final Competition. All 1st and 2nd place prints/images from the session's four club competitions may be submitted for the final competition.
  8. Entrants may remain in the novice section for a maximum of two sessions.

Digital Audio-Visual Competition

The Abertay Award - Sponsored by Joan I. Roy

  1. The competition is open to individual members of Dundee Photographic Society. The subject is open. Entries may take any form but must be recognisable as an audio-visual presentation, employing pre-recorded soundtrack and digital photography.
  2. The winner will receive The Abertay Award, which he/she will hold for one year, or until the date of any subsequent competition, whichever is the earlier. It must be returned to DPS.
  3. Entries will be projected using the DPS digital projector and laptop computer, the entrant to submit a CD or DVD containing an .exe programme, that is, a programme that will run on this equipment with a single click and no extra software. The cursor should not be visible. Further technical information will be supplied, on request by the External Competition Secretary.
  4. Sequences should be no longer than eight minutes from sound or visual commencement to conclusion. Up to two sequences may be entered by any one member. Each sequence entered should contain a title, but the author's name should not be shown. Title, entrant's DPS number and duration of the sequence should be clearly marked on the CD/DVD. Each sequence entered must be submitted on a separate CD/DVD.
  5. A separate entry form must be submitted for each sequence. All CDs/DVDs and accompanying entry forms should be handed in at the club meeting two weeks prior to the evening of the competition. Late entries will not be accepted.
  6. Every effort will be made to show all sequences on the evening of the competition. However, depending on the number of entries and the timings involved, it may be necessary for the judge to make a pre-selection. Entrants will be informed beforehand should this take place.
  7. All images used must be the original work of the author. Each entrant is responsible for ensuring that his/her sequences do not contravene the laws of copyright.
  8. On the evening of the competition, comments will be made by the judge on all sequences shown. The judge's decision is final.

Elena Mae Competition

  1. Entries must consist of a set of 6 digital images. There is no restriction on the subject matter depicted in each digital image, nor is it necessary to link the set by theme or approach.
  2. Images to be submitted on a CD in the format specified at 4 in the General Section of the rules.
  3. Entries must be submitted by the close of the Society meeting two weeks prior to the competition night, or as shown in the syllabus. Entries may be accepted after this time at the discretion of the competition secretary.
  4. Images will be marked out of 20 and the winner will be the entrant with the highest aggregate score.

The Viking Studio Ltd Print Portfolio Competition

  1. The portfolio, which may be in monochrome or colour, must consist of four prints which must be linked by theme or approach. There is no restriction of subject matter.
  2. Each print must not exceed 500mm x 400mm including the mount.
  3. Each print must be individually labelled to show the entrant's DPS Membership No. and print title. If possible, technical details should be noted also. If required, a hanging order should be indicated on the back of the prints.
  4. Entries should be submitted by the close of the society meeting two weeks prior to the competition night or as shown in the syllabus. Entries may be accepted after this time at the discretion of the competition secretary.

Photographer of the Year/Annual Photographic Competition

Sponsored by Dundee City Council this annual competition is organised by DPS and is open to DPS members and the public. Entry forms and rules will be available at the club.

Trophies are:

  • Dundee Corporation Trophy: The three images that best portray Dundee.
  • Robert Saunders Trophy: Best digital image taken in a Dundee Park.
  • Fred Duncan Trophy: The best aggregate score.
  • DPS TROPHIES
  • The Bill Chambers Trophy: Awarded annually for excellence in photography.

  • The President's Plate: Awarded annually at the discretion of the President to a member who has not previously won a trophy.

Monochrome Prints

Entrants should note that in all competitions, entries in monochrome print sections may not include an additional colour. Toning entirely in a single colour is allowed. A print containing partial toning, or an additional colour, should be entered in the colour print sections. Members requiring further clarification should speak to the appropriate competition secretary.

Conditions of Entry

DPS reserves the right to copy prints and retain digital images submitted to society competitions, for society purposes e.g. projection on competition nights, and for publication in the DPS magazine. Credit will be given accordingly. Authors will retain copyright of work.

Prints for Exhibition

Prints submitted for DPS Exhibitions should be mounted on board to fit club frames, which are in two sizes: 500mm x 400mm and 400mm x 300mm. Sizes cut in inches do not fit these frames. Other formats may be accepted at the discretion of the organiser only.

With the author's consent the society would seek to retain images from club competitions as possible entries to SPF and PAGB competitions and local exhibitions.
