A retired biomedical scientist, Ken Kennedy has been interested in Astronomy since the 1950s. A lifelong member of Dundee Astronomical Society, he has also been using photography to record his observations.
Ken is currently Director of Observations at Mills Observatory in Dundee and provides monthly notes for The Courier. He is also Director of the Aurora section of the British Astronomical Association and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Whaling Exhibition

I have been invited to have an Exhibition of my whaling photographs in Sandefjord Whaling Museum in Norway. The exhibition commences on 4th February and I have been invited to attend the opening. Obviously I am delighted and intend to take my wife Pat along.
Two images which will be in the exhibition are shown here. “Backlit whalecatcher” and “View from top of Coronda”.

South Georgia picture prize winner

John Alexander and his wife Pat recently travelled to London to attend a special dinner for veterans of South Georgia whaling. A photographic competition was held, which John had the good fortune to win. The prize was a bottle of champagne.

They also had a raffle based on numbers on the menus. John’s number came up and he received a limited edition book about South Georgia called ”Putting South Georgia on the Map.” This tells the story of the men who mapped the Island in the 1950s while he worked there. The winning photograph is shown here.

Now based in Angus, Yorkshire-born Mark Caunt has been photographing wildlife – mainly birds – and landscape from the age of 10. For 20 years now he has been capturing images in the UK and abroad. Central America, Africa, Asia and America feature prominently. Mark has had his pictures published in several magazines.

His talk is titled Glimpse Through The Cloud Forest Parts 1 & 2.

Jennie’s LRPS Award

I am a “slow learner”. Four years ago I decided to set myself the goal of first learning to use my digital camera beyond the basics, so I enrolled on the AP Magazine online course which was modular and very worthwhile. I then joined the RPS and after three Advisory Days in Scotland, two as an observer and one with work, I decided to submit for my LRPS – after all, not being recommended was the worst that could happen!

Joining DPS in 2010 and the excellent work I saw made me more nervous but with the encouragement of members I began to put together work that would make a “panel” rather than a collection of disparate images. After sorting my printing “woes” with the help of Brian Farey, my selection dithering with the help of Al Buntin, Sheila Taylor and Rikki O’Neill and my Photoshop problems with advice from Colin Stacey, I finally had a mono submission which was sent to Suffolk for assessment.

I felt that my work didn’t look anything like, or as good as, all the other panels I had seen on the RPS website but maybe everyone feels like that. On 19th Sept I was really delighted to receive an email saying I had been successful and a badge and a certificate followed in the post.

1st Novice Competition

Congratulations to the winners of the first Novice competition!

Graeme Penny took first place in the mono print category with his picture called Sleat Point.

First place winner in the colour print category was Catherine Jones with her picture titled What A Day; and Lorna Morrison won first place with her projected image Tulips With Texture.

Irene Froy – November 14

Midlands-based Irene (FRPS MPAGB EFIAP HonPAGB) enjoys all aspects of photography for which she has had a life-long enthusiasm. She describes herself as a pictorial photographer, with a tendency towards landscape, preferring subtle colours to define mood, and loving misty conditions. In recent years she has concentrated on interpreting the landscape and villages of France, using delicate colour and soft images to convey the mood.

She lectures widely and judges and exhibits at home and abroad. Her present lectures deal with Ireland, Italy, France and Spain.

Irene discovered photography while at school and later produced colour prints from transparencies in the darkroom, but has now gone digital. She was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society in April 1994 in the Visual Arts – Pictorial category, with darkroom Colour Prints.

In March 1997 she was invited to membership of the London Salon of Photography. She gained EFIAP (Excellence de la Federation International d’Art Photographique) in 2000 and attained MPAGB in April 2007.

Irene was awarded the APAGB (Award of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain for Services to Photography) in 1985 and this was superceded in 2004 by the award of the J S Lancaster Medal (HonPAGB) for Exceptional Service to Photography.

Worthy Winner

Congratulations go to Shahbaz Majeed whose fabulous image of the Tay Bridge at dusk won the Network Rail “Lines in the Landscape” special award at the Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards 2011. Renowned photographer and competition organiser, Charlie Waite, declared Shahbaz’ picture the best in the section and Shahbaz wins a weekend break and a guided tour of the Severn Rail Tunnel’s Sudbrook Pumping Station.

The picture will appear in the awards book, Landscape Photographer of the Year Collection 5, published in November.
